In Britain, a 19th-century group that
stressed basic protestant beliefs and the
message of the four Gospels. The movement was
associated with Rev Charles Simeon
(1783-1836). It aimed to raise moral
enthusiasm and ethical standards among Church
of England clergy. Linked to the movement was
the religious education provided by the Bible
Society and William Wilberforce's campaign
against the slave trade; it also attempted to
improve the living conditions of the poor,
and Evangelicals carried out missionary work
in India.
